Major Robert Elmer Wodehouse trained with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, Toronto during 1903, while a medical student, and as Lieutenant with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, Winnipeg, during 1912.

Major Robert Elmer Wodehouse was appointed Sanitary Supervisor at Port Arthur and Fort William of Militia Guards, grain elevators docks and electric power plants August 5th, 1914, and examined recruits in Fort William until proceeding to Valcartier, Quebec, with the troop train when attached to Colonel Hodgetts in charge of typhoid and small-pox vaccination. He was later attached to Lt. Col. Nasmith in charge of purification of water supply for Valcartier Camp. He was granted the rank of Major and attached to Headquarters Canadians in this capacity. He sailed for England September 22nd, 1914, attached as Staff Sanitary Expert and Adviser in purification of water; was appointed Sanitary Officer attached to Canadian Headquarters, Salisbury Plains serving in this capacity until January 31st, 1915, when he sailed for France as officer Commanding Sanitary Section, First Canadian Division. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in November 1917, and recalled to England September 17th, 1918, as O.C. of Canadian Convalescent Hospital, Bearwood, Wokingham, Berkshire. He remained in command of this hospital until it was closed Aug 1919. He was gazetted in the King’s Birthday honours 1919 as an Officer of the British Empire and decorated by the King before leaving England.

Returned to Canada and placed on the reserve of officers Aug 1919 Due to demobilization.
