Date of enlistment 16/08/43, at HMCS Hunter – Windsor, age 18 years, 5’ 5 ½”, Hair: Black, Eyes: Blue. Born in Lincolnshire, England. Next of Kin: Jean Marie Whittington.

The father of Thomas. He came to Canada when he was 14 years old. He was all alone. Stayed with several families until he was 18 and could enlist in the Navy.

The CDN 16/10/43 reported that the Rev. R. D. Mess at Christ Church presented a hymn and prayer book to John along with the choir president Mr. Fred Challis commented that John was a valued member of the choir and he would be missed.

The CDN 11/01/45 reported he resumed his duties after a 28 day leave as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sketcher of Forest St. For the past year he had been on duty in South America.

John served on HMCS Sans Peur, Recinalite and Cromwell Park.

History After Enlistment… was a gunner on two different merchant ships- the Reginolite and the Cromwellpark. was twice around the world sailing from Vancouver and New York Ports. Promoted to Able Seaman.
