Born 20/09/1917 in Merlin, ON., the son of Sam and Pearl Wellwood of Merlin.
Reginald enlisted 15/09/39 at London, ON. with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He served overseas in England arriving 4/09/40 where he stayed until the invasion of France. It was in France with the 7th Field Company RCE., of the 2nd Canadian Division, 1st Canadian Army since 7 July, 1944. Reg was reported as being MIA since 26 August. A cable the following day stated he was “Safe and Well”. It begins with Reg being taken as a POW by the German Army and then liberated by the Canadians a week later.
It was reported that that he had been wounded by enemy action on 26 August and captured by the Germans when they over-ran his position. He was taken to hospital for treatment. It was then captured by the Canadians on 1 September and the hospital was liberated. Reg said he was well treated in the hands of the Germans, but the hospital was far from clean. Is wounds were reported as not serious.
While in England he married Iris Clara (nee Wood) in Brighton, England on 14/11/1942.
Good new was received in Canada from his wife in England that “he had reported back to his unit. He had been in France since 7/07/44.
He was discharged from service 7/09/1945.
