Sergeant Joseph Ward transferred to the Artillery shortly after enlisting, with the rank of Sergeant, leaving Guelph with the 29th Battery February 23rd, 1916. After training in England, he crossed to France July 14th, 1916, and served in the trenches until admitted to Hospital, in France, for minor injuries, and three months later returning to active service. One month later Sergeant Ward was returned to England, and admitted to No.3 General Hospital, London, for an operation on left eye.
