Walker of Charing Cross (mother). A single farmer living at Charing Cross. Attestation: 27/10/1915 at Chatham, ON. to 70th Bn.  Found at Blenheim Freedom Library, Blenheim, ON.

Apparent Age: 18 yrs. 3 mths., Height: 5’ 7”, Girth: 35”, Weight: 145#, Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Light Brown. Scar on left knee. Medical Exam: “Fit” 27/08/15 at Chatham, ON., to the 70th O/S. CEF  

Sailed from Halifax, NS. arrived 26/04/16 and Disembarked at Liverpool England at 5/05/16. Transfer to the 21st Batt. FRANCE- Date of Service 11/09/16. John would be hospitalized at the PPCLI – Red Cross – Suffering from “Trench Feet.” Admitted 15/05/17 Discharged 17/08/17. Canadian Convalescent Hosp. – Woodcote Park – Epson 

John contracted Inluenza while serving 7/12/16 at Moore Baks. 22/05/16 – Transfer 24/05/16 to Hoetow, 24/07/16.. “Pain in Chest – cough in chest – following cough, sometimes by blood and was very weak. – No Duty 3/07/16. Discharged to unit 24/07/16. Service 4/07/16 – now feeling better.    

Back  to the 70th Batt. – 27/10/15 to May 1916 – absent 28/02/16 to 29/02/16 AWL. Unit sailed 24/04/16.

Sailed from Liverpool per the S. S. Olympic on 6/11/17. 6/12/17 – reported at the London Military Conv. Hospital – for ‘Trench feet’. 15/04/17 transfer to 7 Can. En. – Etaples –  to Kitchener Mil. Hospital – Brighton. 19/04/17 – Prec. Patt. 16/05/17 (fever) – Red Cross Spec. Ramsgate – Discharged 17/08/17 – MH.C.C. – London 1/12/17 to 12/12/17 at London England 

Once returned to Canada he was awarded $90.00 for 6 months –  Diagnosis – BRONCHITIS and TB. 27/11/17 – as an out-patient 29/11/17 to 12/03/18 

John was AWL and doc. 2 days pay and 9/03/18 and 11/03/18 five days AWL. He was discharged 13/03/18 s : Medically Unfit. 13/03/18 of $32.80 to $27.30 – Degree of incapacity 13/03/18 – Degree of incapacity 50% – probable duration: 4 mos at Quebec 27/11/17. TOS, 29/11/17 AT QUEBEC. 13/03/18 – Discharged.    

Reported to have Passed away dated 18/11/77. The Dept. of Veterans Affairs – Death Notification 16/01/78 CPC – 0286815 – Date of Death:-18/11/47 – Place unknown.

Private John M. Walker received his discharge March 13th, 1918, being unfit for further military service.

Information from Kevin Jenkins: According to an email from Kevin (8/02/2015) his grandmother Ella Walker, wife of Charles she was given his ‘personal-effects bag from the “front” which contained a few photos. Several pairs of glasses, silk hankies and some live rounds of ammunition (which were disposed of in the Thames River by the Chatham Police).
