Engineer Carl F. VonGunten trained during his first year while attending Toronto University and a few months with the Highlanders in 1909.
Engineer Carl F. VonGunten enlisted as Private with the 411th. Engineering Corps at Camp Gorden, Georgia, October 13th, 1917, and was promoted to Sergeant November 25th, 1917. He was made Master Engineer, Senior grade, December 23rd, and set to Camp Lee, Virginia, in June 1918, for special work. In July 1918 he was promoted to Master Engineer, Headquarters Detachment, Camp Forrest, Georgia, with the 605th. Engineers. Arrived in France October 14th, 1918.
