Born 24/10/1919 at Denderhoutem, Belgium; the son of Armund and Clementine (nee Borian) Vandevelde (the family moved to Canada in 1925), of 872 Forham St., Wallaceburg, Ontario. Peter attended Our Lady of Hope separate school. He had three brothers, August 1st Canadian Parachute Batt,, Joseph in 1st Kent’s and Modest at home and four sisters Mrs. Leona Elliot, Mrs. Palmyra Janssen and Mrs. Matilda Van Kruyssen and Miss Teresa at home. Prior to enlisting Peter was employed at the Dominion Glass Co., in Wallaceburg
Peter enlisted at Chatham with the 1st Kent Regt., mobilized in 1940. He trained at # 12 BTC., Chatham, London, Niagara Falls, ON., Terrace, Nanaimo and New Westminister, BC. before going overseas 13 Feb. 1942 to England to the Highland Light Infantry.
His parents had recently received a letter from John saying that he had arrived safely in Sicily.
He went to France on D-Day joining the Highland Light Infantry and was given the honour of raising the Union Jack over the newly liberated city of Caen, France by Canadian forces. He had written home to say he had met his brother August while on a 48 hour leave. The CDN 6/09/44(P) reported that L/Cpl. Peter Vandevelde was killed in France while serving in the Highland Light Infantry.
Peter would be killed in the Quesney Woods area during the Battle of the Falaise Gap by German mortar fire. Age: 24, KIA – Date of Death: 12/08/1944, in France.

Flowers in memory of L/Cpl. Vandevelde were placed at the main gate of the Dominion Glass co. and Our Lady of Hope RC Church.
