Clifford went to public school in Erieau. He originally enlisted with the 1st Kents transferring to the tank ordnance corps in 1941 for overseas service.

Clifford was reported to be “enjoying himself” in England in March 1942. CDN 17/03/42

He saw his first combat during Operation Husky in 1942 and then in the Italian theatre of action.

Though serving in a combat unit in Italy Clifford still found time to remember those loved ones back home a story appeared in the CDN 17/06/44 “Erieau Solder’s Gift Is Delayed”It seems that he was trying to ‘wire’ home a Mother’s Day gift of a fern that he knew his mother would appreciate, the article goes on, “”In some manner the wire sending the plant must have been mislaid, but Mrs’ Turner said that it arrived at a very good time it will do for Father’s Day also.” At the time of this article Pte. Turner had been overseas for three years serving in England, Sicily and Italy. Mrs. Turned said she, “intends to tend it carefully until her son comes home agaun.”

Reported returning to Canada from overseas duty aboard the troopship “Pasteur” expect to dock at Quebec City on the 22nd of September 1945. CDN 20/09/45. Reported returned from overseas duty CDN 23/09/45.
