Born 15/10/1921 in Tilbury, ON. the son of Everett W. and Mabel V. Tilson, of Windsor, Ontario he had a sister Isabelle and a brother Frank. Prior to enlisting Earl was employed by the Imperial Tobacco Co., in Leamington.
Earl enlisted in the army in May of 1942 serving in the Nova Scotia Coastal Battery until July of 1944 when he was sent to England the need for replacements was urgently needed after the D-Day invasion and the fighting for Cean, France.
Pte. Tilson was assigned to the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders who had attacked Dieppe on 19 August, 1942 and lost 346 men of the 507 that attacked. The following two years had seen the regiment rebuilt and in 1944 it was part of the 6th Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. The Camerons had been seeing heavy action from the break out from Cean to the closing of the Falaise Gap on 21/08/44.
Pte. Tilson embarked for France on Aug. 8th , on the 18th of Aug the town of Falaise was captured and Pte. Tilson was a fatality; the Falaise Gap was closed on the 19/20th .
Date of Death:18/08/1944 Age:22 . According to his sister he had only been in combat for two days.
