Son of Dr. Capt. W. W. Thornton (C.A.D.C.) and Mrs. J. L. Thornton of Dresden, ON. A single student living in Dresden. An N.C.O. with the 24th Kent Regt. Attestation: 7/03/1916 at Chatham, ON. to 186th Bn. Transferred to the C.A.D.C. 3/05/1917. Later transferring to the Royal Air Force, reported to have been a POW. MIA for approximately three weeks after shooting down two German aircraft. Reported returned from O/S duty. CDP 20/01/19  (PHOTO)  Reported Alive in handwritten notes on Books of Remembrance.

Sergeant Thornton transferred from the 186th battalion to the Canadian Army Dental Corps and after going overseas again transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as Flight Lieutenant.
