Private Gilbert Thackeray trained two years with the 24th. Kent Regiment, Chatham, Ontario.
Private Gilbert Thackeray mobilized at Valcartier in August 1914, and embarked September 6th, 1914, on the “S. S. Canada” for Bermuda doing garrison duty until August 1915 when he sailed on the “Caledonian” for Canada. Ten days after arrival at Halifax he sailed for overseas and proceeded to France November 1st, 1915, with the R.C.R. January 26th, 1916, he was sent on command to the 7th. Brigade H.Q. staff where he served until February 1917, when he was sent to England, thence to Edinburgh, and admitted to the Royal Infirmary with trench fever. Three weeks later he was transferred to Bushey Park Convvalescent Hospital, England, later to Orpington, where he was placed in category B2. He reported to the 26th. Reserve Battalion, Bramshott Camp, May 18th, 1917, and transferred in September during 1917, to the Canadian Army Medical Corps. He served at the Shorncliffe Depot and from November 1917 at Woodcote Park Convalescent Hospital. January 31st, 1919, he was admitted to Orpington Hospital suffering from the effects of the fever; was transferred to the Canadian Special Hospital, Lenham, and embarked on the Araquaya April 15th, 1919, arriving at Portland, Maine, April 25th, 1919.
