The son of George and Clara Tasker, of Merlin, Ontario. The brother of Georgina (Sinclair) and four other brothers, Pte. Leo who was stationed at Camp Ipperwash, Harold of Windsor, Jack and Max of Merlin. William Douglas attended the Merlin High School and was employed at the Canada Packer plant in Windsor prior to his enlistment.
It was reported that William enlisted in the Canadian Army at Number 1 District Depot at London, ON. in June of 1944. CDN 20/06/44. The Merlin Standard 31/08/44 reported that he along, with, Leo Nelson both of Chatham were at their parents home on a weekend pass.
Pte. Tasker enlisted with the Essex Scottish in June, 1944 and went overseas that same year. A letter received by his parents from Captain Cardy his Padre stated “Bud was a good steady youngster thoroughly game and reliable under fire … the boys thought a great of him”. Pte Tasker was killed by enemy machine gun fire while crossing a bridge during an assault on Groningen, Holland.
