Sergeant Robert Spencer Stone served as Signalling Instructor in Toronto from April 1915 to February 1916, and received his commission as Lieutenant in the 2nd. Field Company, Canadian Engineers, in September 1915. In April 1916he was appointed Assistant District Signalling Officer of M.D.S.No.1 London, and from August to September 1916 served as Lieutenant with the 111th. Battalion, C.E.F. September 20th, 1916, he left for overseas with a draft of unattached officers, attending the Canadian Military School, Shorncliffe, from October to December 28th, 1916, when, until February 15th, 1917, he was with the 8th. Canadian Reserve Battalion Shoreham. he trained until April 14th, 1917, at Reading, as Observer with the R.F.C. proceeding to France April 15th. with the 59th. Squadron, R.F.C. He received gunshot wounds in the calf of the right leg April 24th, 1917, and was admitted to NO.8 General Hospital, Rouen, transferring May 16th. to the 4th. London General Hospital where he received treatment until June 18th, 1917. He was invalided to Canada, arriving June 28th, 1917.
Lieutenant Robert Spencer Stone transferred to the C.E.F. Reserve of Officers November 15th, 1917, for the purpose of completing medical studies.
