Born 24/08/1906 Charles was born in Harwich Township on August 24th, 1906.  His next of Kin is his wife, Mrs. Eleanor Stewart;  His place of enlistment was London, Ontario.  His address at enlistment: was 206 Victoria Avenue, Chatham.

He served in Europe.

In his own words, “In 1942 doctors were needed in the army.  The opportunity came for me to join #10 Canadian General Hospital, a 1200 bed unit (#10 RCAMC).  We moved to France in 1944 and set up at Bayeaux.  After Caen and Falaise we were idle.  In November, I was sent to Antwerp as an anaesthesist and there I was picked up by #1 Canadian Mobile Neurosurgical Unit.  Their anaesthesiologist had had a gastric hemorrhage.  I remained with #1 CMNSU until the unit was broken up.  I ended the war in Clooppenberg, Germany and on VE Day was busy in the OR with several head wounds that occurred just hours before the end.  Promoted to the rank of Major in January 1945 he returned to England in July attached to 1st Cdn. General Hospital at Taplow, England where he remained until his repatriation to Canada in October of 1945. Major Stewart was scheduled to arrive aboard the S.S. Ile de France but was not aboard when she docked. CDN 22/10/45

I was kept busy doing reconstructive problems until repatriated home, October 31 1945.”

Major Stewart was discharged from the army 11/12/1945

Dr. Stewart practiced anesthesiology in Chatham until 1952 moved to London, ON. 

Dr. Stewart passed away 25 November, 1995.
