Unit # 1st Hussars

The son of Mrs. G. Stevenson, Ridgetown, ON., born 28/01/1919 in Ridgetown, ON. Charles grew up in Ridgetown. He went up to Shillington, ON., in 1940 to build a log-cabin and was able to finish it in 1946, cutting all of the logs with the help of a neighbor.

Charles enlisted 2/02/1941 in London, ON. to the 1st Hussars. He served overseas in England, France and Germany. It was reported in the Ridgetown newspaper in Dec. 1943 that ‘smokes’ were sent to this soldier. RIN 5/12/17  Beside the 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star and the Defence Medal + Bar he was awarded the Commander-in-Chief Certificate for Gallentry.

When he was discharge from the Army he married Jean MacKenzie in 1946 and they had two children. He loved to play the mouth organ, Jews Harp, fiddle like Wilf Carter. Sadly Charles passed away in December of 1949 from cancer one month before his 30th birthday.
