James was of Chatham, ON.  He was born in Detroit, Michigan 1/06/1919 and living at 3415 Bagley St., Detroit. He enlisted with the Essex Scottish in Chatham, ON in April, 1940. James trained at Camp Borden. He went overseas with the Essex’s and while in England, became quite good at boxing winning several prizes. He married Evelyn Maud and was reported living at Iffley, Oxfordshire, England.

American born James W. Steers went ashore at Dieppe with the Essex Scottish, part of the raiding party that was going to test Hitler “Atlantic Wall” and would not return with the remnants of the attacking force.  It was first reported as MIA and then POW by the Red Cross, both turned out not to be the case.

KIA – Date of Death: 19/08/1942, at Dieppe, France.
