The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Steckley of Ridgetown, ON. The Ridgetown Dominion 1944 reported that Harold had been awarded the 1939 – 43 Star for his service in Sicily and Italy. At the time he was commanding a “troop of anti-tank guns in “ the 1st Canadian Anti-Tank Regiment”. The Canadians had just recently turned the “Hitler Line”. Born in Newmarket ON., the family had moved to Guelph where his father was on the staff of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC). Professor Steckley then moved to Ridgetown as the Director of the Western Ontario Experimental Farm about 1937.
Harold graduated from the Ridgetown High School and he went on to study at Queen’s University for two years before enlisting in the RCA in July of 1942. It was reported that Howard graduated at the Officers Training School at Brockville, ON. in November, 1942. CDN 13/11/42(P) He trained at Brockville and Petawawa before going overseas in 1943, Harold was 24 years old when he served in Italy.
He had recently be on leave in Amalfi, Italy. RIN 29/08/12.
