Thomas was the son of William and Mary Lizzie Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; husband of Daisy D. Stainton of 12 Jeffery St., Chatham, ON., they had a daughter Jean who was three at the time of the Dieppe raid. When interviewed by the Chatham Daily News 19/09/42 she said: “ This case is not entirely hopeless. We are all trusting that he has either been taken prisoner, or is still trying to find his way back to England. We refuse to believe the worst until definite word is received and this is some comfort in a time such as this.”

Appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown). Thomas would later transfer to the Essex Scottish for overseas duty.

Thomas enlisted in the Kent Regt. in April 1940 shortly after arriving in Chatham. He did not stay long as the drilling at the militia interfered with his working hours.

A native of Saskatchewan. He married Daisy in 1938 and came to Chatham to live. Prior to the war he was employed at the Libby, McNeil and Libby Co. and with William Green  a Chatham contractor. He was 26 years old when he enlisted.

Age: 26 DOW, Date of Death: 19/08/1942 while a prisoner of war.

Reported as MIA on the Dieppe Raid in the Windsor Star of 16 September, 1942. WS 16/09/42.  It was later reported in the Windsor Star 28/09/42 that after Pt. Staintons’ capture at Dieppe he succumbe to his wounds
