Son of Clarence and  Vera E. Smith of Forest St., Chatham, ON. A student of McKeough Public School and Chatham Vocational School. Husband of Jeanne (Holling) of 23 Forest St., Chatham. Vernon and Jeanne were married at the Chapel at No. 12 BTC. – Chatham by Capt. Rev. W. G. Wylie. The couple honeymooned at “points east” and upon their return she would be staying at her parent’s home. CDN 4/02/44 Prior to his enlistment Vernon was employed at Chryslers.  His brother was Clarence Melvin Smith who was in the service.  His brother-in-law George Howard Skipper was also in the service.

Vernon enlisted in November 1942. Served overseas.  Tpr. Smith was reported training at Camp Borden, ON when he was granted an eight day furlough to see his wife. CDN 21/03/44.

The CDN 30/05/44(P) reported that 21 year old Trooper Smith serving in the Canadian Armoured Corp was overseas.

History After Enlistment… Served as Trooper in the Armoured Tank Corps in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany.

He was reported returning from two years of overseas duty aboard the “Queen Mary” . CDN 11/01/46.

Date of Discharge… March 1st 1946
