Private Samuel Reginald Smith went overseas in May 1916, proceeding to France September 5th, 1916. At the Battle of the Somme he was buried by shell, and after Hospital treatment for five weeks returned to his Battalion. At Vimy Ridge he was permanently disabled having his hip fractured and ribs broken. he was returned to Canada.

Private Samuel Reginald Smith received his honorable discharge in October 1917, being medically unfit for further military service.
