Private Robert Smith returned to England as a Reservist when war was declared leaving Chatham August 18th, 1914, and crossing to France early in September with the Imperials from which he received his discharge in August 1915. he returned to Canada in September 1915. two weeks after being in Chatham he re-enlisted with the 70th. Battalion, from which he was transferred to the 186th. Battalion going overseas March 26th, 1917, and proceeding to France with a draft for the 18th. Battalion.
