The son of Mr. and Mrs. George Smith of 27 Dover St., Chatham, ON., the brother of Allan M. (Army) and Winnifred J. (RCAF-WD)  and another brother Maurice (US Army) and sister Irene at home.  Prior to his enlistment he was employed at the Ontario Steel Products Co., in Chatham.

Norman enlisted in the spring of 1941. He was reported as serving on a Canadian destroyer.
