Born in 1919 at Chatham, ON.  Of 308 King St. West, Chatham, ON.

Gordon enlisted in the RCAF 30/12/1940. He trained at Picton NS. and St. John, NB. and then to Montreal, PQ. at No.1 Wireless School. Went overseas and was stationed at Dalton, Yorkshire, England at 6 Battle School Group. Assigned to 408 Squadron flying Halifax bombers his plane was christened “Willie Wolf”.

The CDN 24/04/43 reported that Flt. Sgt. Smith and Mrs. Smith had arrived from the east coast to spend a couple of weeks in Chatham while on leave to see family and friends. 

Reported to be sailing on the troop ship “Duchess of Richmond”, expected to arrive at Quebec City on or about the 19th of August, 1945. From there he will proceed to No. 1 Repatriation Depot in Lachine to receive leave. CDN 18/0845. A telegram dated 20 August, 1945 to his mother read: “Arrive Toronto tonight to meet Pearl. Contact you soon. Love Gordon”. F/O Smith was discharged from the RCAF 10/10/1945.

Married to Pearl they were living at 308 King St. West in Chatham after the war.

After the war he joined the Ontario Provencial Police (OPP) at No.1 District at Chatam. Promoted to Corporal in 1961 and Detective – Sergeant in1962. He wa promoted to Inspector in 1963 and was transferred to GHQ – Toronto and remained there until he retired in October 1977.

Date of Death: 17/07/1989 at the age of 70 years, buried at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, ON.
