The son of Mr. and Mrs. James Smith he was one of three Cedar Springs boys on a weekend leave from HMCS Hunter in Windsor. It was reported in the BNT 20/09/44 that Garnet was on a two week leave to visit his parents. Usually an indication of going into active service soon.

The CDN 22/01/45 reported that Pte. Garnet Smith age 23 years had been wounded while serving in Italy.
