Captain Smith joined the 24th Kent Regiment as Private and was promoted from rank to rank until at the outbreak of the was he was Major.
He went overseas with the 1st Canadian Contingent in Sept. 1914, proceeding to France Feb. 5, 1915 with the 1st Infantry Battalion.
He was gazetted Major in March 1915, serving with undaunted courage for which he mentioned several times in official dispatches, until June 15, 1915, when he paid the supreme sacrifice for King and country.
