The son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Smith of 197 Stanley Ave., Chatham, ON. A graduate of Chatham Vocational school.

Previous Military Experience… None

Ernie originally enlisted with the First Kents, A49822, in 1940, transferred to the Essex Scottish Regt and went overseas as with a draft of reinforcements.  He was wounded in action during the Battle of the Falaise Gap in 1944.

He was later stationed in England as an instructor. He is the brother-in-law of Gnr. Reginald James also reported WIA. CDN 5/01/45

History After Enlistment… Trained in Canada. Transferred to the Essex Scottish Regiment and went overseas September 1942. Was wounded by shell fragments in Arm.  Ernie was repatriated, aboard the Queen Elizabeth.

Date of Discharge… January 1946

Ernie passed away 27 June, 1995
