Smith of 55 Princess St., Chatham, ON., where he was living. A single bank clerk when he enlisted 22/11/1915 at St. Thomas to the 91st Bn. transferring to the 186th Bn. 28/02/1916. Private Lester D. Smith was Captain in the Chatham Central School Cadets in 1913.

Private Lester D. Smith was transferred from the 91st. Battalion to the 186th. Battalion, as Sergeant of the Scout Section, proceeding overseas March 26th, 1917. he trained at Bramshott Camp, crossing to France September 1st, 1917, attached to the 18th. Battalion. November 6th, 1917, he was admitted to Hospital in France having been gassed and also suffering from trench fever and trench feet. He was returned to England for treatment and discharged from Hospital March 1918, continuing training at Witley Camp.
