Regimental number: 880001. Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 8994-16, Item: 234420, PDF: B8994 – S016. Date of Birth: 15/01/1872 at Brighton, Sussex, England. Living in Chatham, ON at 127 Joseph St., Chatham, ON.The husband of Lilie Smart, father of Olive (19) Dorthy (16), Ivy (14), Frank (13), May (4) and Reta (2) [these ages would be based on his enlistment in 1916 JRH]. His occupation at the time was a Bank messenger.

Attestation 31/01/1916 at Chatham, ON. to the 186th Battalion age 44 years, 5’ 8”. Prior to his enlistment he was in the 24th Kent Regt. It was reported at his “Medical”, 25/01/16 that he had a scar on left shoulder, one over his right breast and scars on both knees.  

George departed Halifax for England with the 186th Battalion, aboard the S. S. Lapland, arrived in England 7/04/17. Upon arrival he was TOS 11/06/17 at Bramshott. He was transferred to the C.D.D. 11/06/17. Sadly George’s wife passed away soon after George left for England and his 16 year old daughter was ‘Gardian’ of the four youngest children.

Private George Smart left for overseas with the 186th. Battalion March 26th, 1917, and proceeded to Bramshott Camp where he trained with the 4th. Reserve Battalion. Two weeks later his wife died, leaving a family of six children and he was therefore returned to Canada on compassionate grounds. He was then attached to the W.O.R. London, Ontario, until he received his discharge.

George was granted leave on “Compassionate Grounds”and he embarked for Canada 10/07/17. George proceeded to Canada for Discharge. He was discharged from service No. 1 Special Services 14/09/17 at the age of 45 years, 7 months. London, ON   

Private George Smart received his discharge September 14th, 1917, on compassionate grounds.
