Born in Chatham, ON. The only son of Clifford Smallwood and of Mary Jane Smallwood (nee Burns), brother of Joyce and Marilyn of 3541 Benny Ave., Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada. An aunt Mrs. J. A. Mackness lived in Chatham, ON. Jack was educated in Toronto and British Columbia, he was attending the University of British Columbia at the time of his enlistment in February, 1943.
He graduated from Malton as a navigator and went overseas in May of 1944. While at #82 Training Unit the crew of Wellington aircraft # LN 167 during a bombing practice the port engine burst into flames: the pilot attempted a forced landing but crashed at Crow Park, Nottinghamshire, England. Besides F/O Smallwood, F/O’s J. G. Rowe, J. R. Farlette and Sgt. S. L. McCon were killed in the crash; C. G. Morris died of his injuries shortly after the crash.
