Private Roland Henry Small transferred from the 91st. Battalion with the Kent members February 28th, 1916, and left Halifax for overseas March 26th, 1917. he trained at Bramshott until September 26th, 1917, when he proceeded to France with reinforcements for the 18th. Battalion. He served continuously until May 3rd, 1918, when he received fourteen wounds in the body and shrapnel wounds causing the loss of the right eye. He was admitted to hospital in Rouen, France, was transferred to Birmingham Hospital, England May 15th, and to Westcliffe Hospital, Folkestone, June 7th. He reported at Witley Camp October 22nd, and left for Canada December 10th. 1918, arriving at Halifax December 15th. 1918.
Private Roland Henry Small received his discharge January 17th, 1919, being medically unfit for further military service.
