Private Smale left for overseas with the 70th battalion on Good Friday in April 1916, and after training at West Sandling, proceeded to France in July 1917, transferring to the 21st Canadian Battalion.
West of Passchendaele, Nov. 3, 1917, during a violent enemy bombardment, he was killed in action, being struck by shrapnel from a bursting shell.
