The CDN 15/04/44 reported that Alvin had been home to see his parents Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Shackleton, of Cornhill St., Chatham. Alvin graduated from McKeough School and C.C.I and the Canada Business School in Chatham

He was returning to Lethbridge, Alberta after a ten-day furlough.

Alvin enlisted in the RCAF 1 February, 1942. He trained at the Manning Depot , Toronto, TTS at St.Thomas and No.8 Bombing & Gunnery School at Lethbridge, AB. He was just 20 years old.
