Private Barney Schwantz trained at St. Thomas with the 91st. Battalion, and was transferred in June 1916 to the 186th, going overseas March 26th, 1917. He proceeded to France June 15th, 1917, posted to the 18th. Canadian Battalion. He was gassed August 16th, 1917, and after convalescence in England was transferred to the C.A.M.C. serving at Folkstone and later transferred to NO.12 Canadian General Hospital, Bramshott.

Original disease: Quiescent Pulmonary – Tuberculosis. “ Following his being gassed (Gas Poisoning) and also aggravated by an attack 0f Bronchitis. Necessity for rest of the body dye to pulmonary T. B. acquired on Active Service.” Gassed in August 1917 – rendered unconscious for an hour and a half, he suffered during the following 4 or 5 months. Suffered from Bronchitis 28/06/16 to 25/07/16. Recommend dates – “Discharge as MEDICALY UNFIT.
