Regimental number: 189559,  Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 8684-36, Item: 215935, PDF: B8684-S036. Date of Birth: 12/04/1900 (he enlisted using as his DOB 12/04/1896 (it would turn out that his birth date was 12/04/1900) at Vienna, ON. The son of Virgal and Maud Scanlan, of 2nd Concession of Chatham Twsp., Kent Co., ON. he was a single Book keeper.

Attestation 6/12/1915 at St. Thomas, ON. to the 91st Batt. Age at enlistment 19 years, 6 months. He had a small scar on his right arm and a scar on his right knee. His first enlistment was to the 186th Batt. service no. 880235 22/02/1916. He did his training at Camp Bordon 

He left for  England embarking aboard the S.S.Lapland from Halifax 25/03/17 and Debarked at Liverpool, England. 7/04/17. He was taken to the Segregation Camp at Bramshot. From there to the 4th Cdn. Reserve Batt. 25/08/17 He was processed overseas to the 18th Batt. Percy joined the 18th Batt. “In the Field” 8/09/17.

Private Percy Scanlan transferred from the 91st. to the 186th. Battalion, going overseas March 26th, 1917. He crossed to France August 17th, 1917, attached to the 18th. Battalion. In December 1917 he was admitted to Hospital suffering  with trench foot, and upon recovery returned to Bramshott March 10th, 1918.

 

Percy was evacuated to the Roune Stational Hospital 16/11/17.  On 20/11/17 he was admitted to the Bath Hospital in England suffering from Trench Foot. He was transferred to Woodcote Park Hospital at Epson 22/11/17 He was finally transferred to hospital at Bramshot 26/11/17 and was finally discharged 1/03/18.

It was while making his way through the hospitals that he was in fact a “Minor” underaged and was to be sent back to Canada 12/08/18. He embarked at Liverpool for Canada 12/08/18. Percy was discharged from the army 21/08/18. At that time his address was 403 Victoria Ave., Chatham, ON.

According to his military file Percy passed away 28 August, 1956.

Curators Note: – Vienna is a small village just north of Port Burwell on county road 19 and west of Long Point.
