The son of Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Jessie Sands of Wallaceburg, and Walpole Island, ON. Clayton’s father passed away and his mother re-married William Markham and they lived in Wallaceburg. Clayton attended public school at No.1 school on Walpole Island.
The Wallaceburg News 17/07/41 reported that Clayton was stationed in London, ON. with the 1st Kents when he was given a week-end leave. The brother of Claude who was serving in the Army in the same unit as Clayton; and Roslyn who was KIA 14/04/45.
Wounded in action he would be returned to Canada aboard the Lady Nelson Hospital Ship, and still on crutches Pte. Sands was reported in the CDN 1/03/45(P) returning to Chatham and greeted by City Councillors, Red Cross and Legion representatives. A photograph of Pte. Sands being welcomed back to Wallaceburg showed him on crutches shaking hands with Councillors. WN 29/03/45
