Born in 1915 at Harwich Twsp, Kent Co., ON, the son of Joseph and Ethel Russell of Edgar St., Chatham, ON. The brother of June and Mrs. Milton Moore.
Clayton enlisted in the RCAF in 1940, In January of 1942 he was stationed at No. 7 S.F.T.S. (Service Flying Training School – part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan) with the rank of LAC, at McLeod, Alberta. He had been home on leave in January of 1942 returning to Alberta. CDN 28/01/42. Serving over five years and six months in the RCAF, his overseas duty as a cook in England.
LAC Russell stationed at the Bombing & Gunnery School, Lethbridge, AB., was spending an extended leave at his home on Edgar St., Chatham and visiting his mother who was seriously ill in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chatham. CDN 9/06/42
He was reported “somewhere along the Pacific coast since July 1942 in the CDN 10/11/42(P).
The CDN 17/02/43 reported Cpl. Russell had been stationed in Alaska with the RCAF was home on a furlough visiting his parents and Mrs. Milton Moore and Miss June Russell.
He was discharged from the air force 5/12/1945.
