MSA #: 706797.  Date of Birth: 10/06/1897 at Charing Cross, Kent Co., ON.  Charles was the son of Silas W. and Mary E. Russell of RR #1 Charing Cross. He had brothers Bruce (also in the military), Alexander, Bert, John, Edward, Norman, and Otis, as well as a sister Helen. At the time of enlistment, he was single and farming. He married Violet Pepper on March 24, 1921. They had four children, Evelyn, Clifford, Jean, and Lois. Charles passed away June 4th, 1983, predeceased by his wife Violet and daughter Jean. He is buried in Pardoville Union Cemetery.

Attestation: at London, ON. 6/11/18, Category A-II to 1st. WOR (Western Ontario Region) Battalion.

Age: 21 years, height: 5’ 7”, Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Light Brown. Eye sight: 20/20, hearing:normal – Medical Exam: 11/06/18. No dental issues. Signed up for duration of war.

12/07/18 entered Engineers Training Depot – Brockville, ON. Transferred from 1st WOR 17/06/18 to the 7th Field Company – CE.

Charles embarked on the HM ‘Corriscan’ at Montreal, PQ. 19/07/18 for London, England. Arrived  8/08/18. 19/08/18 Taken on Strength (TOS) to 3rd CERB at Seaford until 4/09/18. Examined 3/06/1919 at Seaford Struck Off Strength (SOS).

Embarked at Liverpool, England for Halifax, NS. 23/06/1919 TOS at the Kingston Dispersal Area. Discharged from service 3/07/1919 “Cessation of Hostilities”. Credited service: Canada and England (not overseas).  

Sapper Charles W. Russell went overseas in July 1918, training at Seaford with 3rd C.E.R.B. Returned to Canada July 2nd 1919.

Discharged July 4, 1919 due to demobilization.

His ‘pay’ was $240.00 and Charles had sent to his mother $20.00/month.
