Born in Scotland in 1920, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Robertson of Homewood Ave., Toronto. Robert came out to Blenheim in 1928. He had two brothers also serving, Wallace James (tanks) and William Alexander (airforce)
He attended Public School and High School in Merlin. He was living in Blenheim when he enlisted in the RCR 3 October, 1939 [the 198 [enlistments to the Royal Canadian Regt. the regiment started enlistments for WWII at 3000 – Curators note JRH.]
A veteran of Dunkirk. He was a well known boxer winning the ‘Heavy weight’ championship in the Canadian Army in 1940 and the ‘Middle weight’ championship in 1941.
The CDN 31/03/44 reported that L/Sgt. Robertson had been WIA while serving with the RCR in Italy. According to a letter received by his parents: “I suffered a bullet wound through both hips, fortunately no bones or tendons were injured. It happened while I was in an attack”, written by Robert from his hospital bed.
