Born 20/10/1918 in Bakonykuti, Hungary. Vendel was 11 years old when he came to Canada. The son of Paul and Elizabet (nee Hulber) Riedl of Huron St. South, Wallaceburg, ON., brother of Paul (RCNVR). Married to Norma Kathleen (Brown/ Giffith) Riedl of 58 Minnie St. Wallaceburg, ON. Vendel was working at the Dominion Glass Co. prior to the war.
He enlisted in Chatham, ON in August of 1940 first with the Western Ontario Regt. He trained at BTC #12 Chatham, Windsor and Camp Borden, ON. He went overseas 19/10/1941 with the Essex Scottish Regt.
Reported as a casualty on the Dieppe Raid in the Windsor Star of 16 September, 1942. WS 16/09/42. It was reported that he was killed before reaching the shore.
KIA – Date of Death: 19/08/1942. His body washed ashore at Schouwen, Holland where he was temporarily buried at Haamstede Cemetery, Grave 54. After the war he was transferred to the CWGC cemetery.
