Born 28/08/1913 at Merlin, Raleigh Twsp., Kent Co., ON. the son of Dr. Frederick Irwin and Annie (MacLachlan) Reid; the brother of Betty. William was educated at the Merlin Public School, Central School in Chatam, and the Chatham Collegiate Institute.
Attending the University of Toronto medical school, graduated M.D. in 1938 then interned for a year and a half at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.
William enlisted with the RCAF – Medical Corp in April 1940 serving overseas in England May 1944, and Italy he was the liaison officer between the RCAF and the RAF in the Mediterranean Theatre of action. Sqd./Ldr. Reid was seriously injured in a aircraft crash 21 November 1944. His injuries consisted of “a fracture of the fourth lumbar vertebrae and a fracture of the pelvis into the bladder”. After some recovery from a broken back, he was invalided back to Canada in February of 1945
The CDN 28/02/45(P) reported Dr. Reid had talked to his son shortly after he arrived in Montreal. Dr. Reid said he is “fine and apparently able to get around very well, although he still has to take things easy. However “Judging from the ship he came over on isn’t incapacitated too badly.”
He was discharged from the RCAF in November 1946.
After the war he began a general medical practice in Chatham with a specialty in Anesthesiology.
