Private Walter Pilbeam enlisted at Chatham May 29, 1916 in the 186th Battalion and trained with that unit in Canada until March 1917.
He was rejected for the front line troops on account of his height and was transferred to 122nd Forestry Battalion with which he went overseas June 1917. After landing he proceeded to France July 1917 and joined the 49th Canadian Forestry Coy. He remained with that unit until Feb 1919 when he was sent to Sunningdale Camp in Windsor Great Park and stayed on permanent fatigue until the end of August when he embarked on the S.S. Adriatic en route for Canada.
Discharged at London Sept 16th 1919 due to demobilization.
