Son of Mr. A. MacKenzie of R.R. #4 Thamesville, ON. Married to Mrs. Jean Percy of 223 ½ Forest St., Chatham, ON. Married to Mrs. Jeanne of 223 ½ Forest St., Chatham, ON. Clare was working at the A&P stores in Chatham. He was well known in both Chatham and Windsor where he spent his youth. Clare enlisted in the Essex Scottish in August 1940, following his brothers Louis and Kenneth. He was 28 years old at the time of the raid,
Reported as a casualty on the Dieppe Raid in the Windsor Star of 16 September, 1942.
Mrs. Jeanne Percy was relieved to finally hear that her husband was not a fatality at Dieppe but was reported to be a POW. She received the following telegram:
“Acting Corporal Clare David Percy reported by the International Red Cross, Geneva, as prisioner of war in Germany, Further information follows when received”. A/Cpl. Percy was one of three brothers MIA from the Dieppe raid. CDN 26/09/42.
A similar telegram was received by his parents in Windsor theat both Kenneth and Lewis were also POW’s. All three of the ‘Percy boys’ were in the same platoon at Dieppe. WS 16/09/42. Reported returning from overseas duty aboard the vessel Queen Mary docking at New York City. CDN 11/07/45.
