Born 16 June, 1920 in Raleigh Twsp., Kent Co., ON. the father of Shirley (Pepper-Boersma) the son of David Oscar and Olive May (nee Huff) Pepper. The brother of Millicent (Guyett), Mac, Martin, Arthur, Bill and David (who died as an infant). Martin and Bertha May (nee Mardling) had three children, Martin Ivan born 17/11/42, Shirley Louise (Pepper-Boersma) born 8/09,1948 and Glenda Marlene born 29/01/57. The family lived in Chatham at Martin Court, Barthes St., and at 221 Joseph St until 2009.

Enlisted in 1942 and trained at No. 12 Basic Training Camp, Tweedsmuir Ave. Chatham and at Camp Ipperwash, ON.

Martin served overseas and was hospitalized in England. It is thought that he might have had Malaria. He returned to Chatham in October 1946.

The CDN 31/12/45 reported that he returned to Canada aboard the S. S. Mauretania, arriving in Halifax, NS. 1/01/46. [It may have been necessary to have a medical release before going home in Chatham?] JRH. The next of Kin was reported to be Mrs. H. R. Pepper of R.R. 6 Chatham, ON.

After the war Martin worked in his cousin Art’s gravel business on Highway #3, past the site of the former Southwest regional Centre. Around 1950 he was working for the Glover’s Dairy on William st. in Chatham until the dairy was sold by Ross Glover to Fred Vale. Then worked for the Silverwoods Dairy and the LI Dairy finally retiring approximately in 1980.

He returned to Chatham in October 1946.

Martin passed away 5 September, 2000 at the age of 78 years of age and Bertha 31/12/2010.
