Pte. Ernest H. Pelkey went overseas with the 1st Canadian Contingent in September 1914, and after training at Salisbury Plains, proceeded to France February 15th, 1915. He received a severe wound to his left eye, causing loss of the eye, April 22nd, 1915, and after an operation at Boulogne, was returned to England May 5th, 1915. Upon sufficient recovery, from December 24th, 1915 to January 28th, 1916, he acted as Dispatcher attached to the Alberta Regimental Depot. He continued training at Bramshott until January 20th, 1917, when he again crossed to France, transferring to the 50th Battalion. He received wounds in the knee March 1st, 1917. He was in Hospital until August 15th, 1917, when, after convalescence, he was returned to Canada, embarking April 24th, 1918, and reaching Chatham May 3rd, 1918.
