Serving overseas with the RCASC. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Patterson of Duluth, his wife and two children reside at 42 William St., Chatham, ON.

Previous Military Experience: Served with the Signallers from 1928 to 1931.

After Enlistment, James Patterson  in July 1940 trained with the Kent’s at London, Halifax, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Vancouver and Terrace, BC.   Serving overseas with the RCASC.

James was reported returning to Niagara-on-the-Lake after a short leave at home in Chatham. CDN 2/02/42. In May of 1942 James was home from New Westminister, BC., on a furlough his mother had been ill but was reported as improving. CDN 11/05/42.  He was home again in December of 1942 from the west coast on a five day furlough before leaving to take a three week course in Windsor, ON. CDN 30/12/42

The CDN 1/03/43 reported In March of 1943 he volunteered for service overseas. He had arrived from the west coast to spend a few days furlough.

In March of 1943 he volunteered for service overseas, and he had seen action through Sicily and Italy for thirteen months while serving with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division RCASC and attached to the Perth regiment.  He had seen action through Sicily and Italy for thirteen months while serving with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division RCASC and attached to the Perth regiment. Received a knee injury in Italy. Transferred to another theatre of war he served two and a half years overseas. Promoted to Sergeant. He served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps.

The CDN 6/11/44 reported that Sgt. Patterson was in hospital suffering from injuries to his knee and chest but “is making progress towards recovery”.

The CDN 7/10/44 reported that L/Sgt. Patterson was officially reported WIA 24/09/44. At the time the nature and extent of his wounds were available.
