Michael Augustine O’Neil was born in Dover Centre, County of Kent, ON. He is the son of Edward Aloysius and Mary Louise O’Neil, of Chatham, Ontario. Michael attended public school in Chatham. He later moved to Chatham to follow his trade as a carpenter at Beaver Lumber company. Michael is the husband of Mary Eileen O’Neil, of Chatham and was married in 1940.  They had three children namely, Mary Kathleen, three, Michael Edward, 22 months and Ann Louise, five months old, who was born after Michael who went overseas. They were living at 233 Queen, St., Chatham, ON.

Michael enlisted in January 1943, who trained in Windsor and Chatham at BTC No.12, Camp Ipperwash Trade School and Hamilton  before going overseas in June of 1943.

The CDN 22/07/44(P) reported that Pte. O’Neil  was serving overseas with the Canadian Army.

The CDN 4/11/44(P) reported on the death of Pte. O’Neil. He had recently written home telling his family that after the combat in Holland, he had some leave. It was assumed that he met his death after returning to the front line a second time.

Age: 30, KIA – Date of Death: 24/10/1944, in Holland. Service No: A/117025

Besides his mother, he left four sisters and three brothers.
