Rank Private, Sergeant
Service # A/107681
Unit # R.C.I.C., Highland Light Infantry of Canada, Essex Scottish Regiment

Son of Arthur and Doris Newington, of 164 King St. E., Chatham, Ontario. Raymond had come to Chatham with his parents who left England in 1926. His father, a veteran of the Great War served as an instructor at BTC N. 12 for 31/2 years. Raymond attended Central and Queen Mary School and the Chatham Vocational School.

He served two years in the Second Kent Regt with the rank of Sergeant when he left the Kent’s to join the ‘active’ army in August of 1943. He trained at BTC no. 12, Chatham advance training at Camp Ipperwash and finally and at Woodstock.

The date of his being wounded was not available when his parents were informed that he had died of his wounds:

Age: 19, DOW – Date of Death: 12/08/1944, in France.

Raymond’s last letter home on 8 August stating that he was in France serving with the Essex Scottish which he had been transferred to; this narrows the time frame to four days. It is likely that he died in the attacks on the city of Caen after the Normandy invasion. His father had recently discharged from BTC 12. CDN 21/08/44(P)
