Private Spencer Newham left for overseas with the 186th Battalion March 26th, 1917. While in England, he transferred to the Canadian Army Service Corps, and again to the Infantry. He then proceeded from Witley Camp to France June 1st, 1918, to the 47th Battalion. September 2nd, 1918, where he received shrapnel wounds in the right elbow, left arm, left hip and a fractured skull. He was admitted to Kitchener Hospital, Brighton, England, and returned to Canada March 23rd, 1919, on the Empress of Briton, arriving at St. John March 30th, 1919.
Private Spencer Newham received his discharge April 2nd, 1919, as unfit for further military service and demobilization.
