The son of Robert and Letetia Nelson of 212 Parker St., Sarnia, ON. Occupation: Labourer – Single. Attestation : 1/01/16 at Sarnia, ON., age 19 years, 5’ 7” taken on 149th Battalion.
His unit sailed aboard the S. S. Lapland 25/03/17 and disembarked at Liverpool, England 7/04/17. It may have been because he had untreated astigmatism as a youth that he was not with an infantry battalion.
He was reported WIA while serving with the 4th Canadian Engineers Batt. Admitted to hospital 1/04/17 to #7 Surgical Hospital – Camirs, France. He was transferred to Bramshott 25/04/17 rank of L/Cpl. Transferred to 11th Hospital at Epsom 16/05/17. He was later transferred to No.11 Cdn. General Hospital Shorncliffe and was discharge from there 1/07/17.
He was taken ill in April 1919 and admitted to the 7th General Hospital at Wimereux, 3/04/1919 transferred to the 9th Cdn. Stationary Hospital – Camiers. Moved to hospital in Epsom 15/05/19 and discharged from Woodcote Hospital in Epsom 21/05/19 and sent to No.11 Cdn. General Hospital at Shorncliffe 5/07/19 until 1/08/19 when he was fit to return to Canada
He left Glasgow for Montreal aboard the S. S. Saturina sailing 25/07/19 and arrived at Montreal 4/08/19.
Robert was awarded the French “Medaille d’honnear pour acte de courage et d’evourement. The honour was mentioned in the London Gazette 21/03/19.
