Served with the Kent Regiment prior to enlistment.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Murray of 32 Adelaide St. North, Chatham, ON. His father served in WWI. Married to Dorothy they were living at 28 Willowmac Avenue, Chatham. He served with Kent’s before transferring to the Royal Canadian Regt., shortly after the start of the war, he left a position in Chicago to join up.
Edward had gone overseas with the RCR in August 1940 but was unable to leave with them. In November of 1942, two days before they were to depart for the Mediteranian Sgt Murray contracted pneumonia and was left behind. He wasn’t the join his unit but each time he tried the medical officer turned him down. Edward was hospitalized in England with Bronchitis.He had been in England for two years.
Reflecting on what he had been through “During the dark days of 1940 when invasion of England was expected hourly. Sgt. Murray often wondered if he would ever see Canada again. He stated that Canadians were about all that stood in the way of invasion and they were only poorly equipped for such a threat.” CDN 13/03/44
Edward was reported home in the CDN 13/03/44, but determined to rejoin the RCR’s
